Heinz Ketch-Up & Down: A Bold Packaging Innovation by FP7 McCann

Heinz Arabia has introduced a groundbreaking packaging innovation—the Heinz Ketch-Up & Down, the world’s first double-lid bottle. Designed to solve a long-standing challenge for ketchup lovers, this bottle features two lids, making it easy to squeeze from any direction.

For decades, ketchup fans struggled to get every last drop from their bottles. In response, Heinz launched its iconic upside-down bottle, a game-changer in condiment packaging. However, many consumers still stored it upright, missing its intended convenience. To create a truly foolproof solution, Heinz Arabia and FP7 McCann Dubai designed the Ketch-Up & Down—keeping the classic bottle design but adding a lid on both ends.

Passant El Ghannam, Head of Marketing at Kraft Heinz MEA, shared, “At Heinz, we are consumer-obsessed, using insights to drive innovation. Building on the success of our upside-down bottle, we saw an opportunity to solve an ongoing problem. If scaled up, this could be a game-changer for ketchup lovers. The Ketch-Up & Down gives fans more of what they love—the great taste of Heinz.”

While its design may seem playful, it raises fascinating questions about human behavior. Federico Fanti, Chief Creative Officer at FP7 McCann, remarked, “Despite having a clearly designed upside-down bottle, only 40% of consumers stored it correctly. Such silliness needed an equally silly solution. If one lid wasn’t enough, we gave them two.”
